Paddy to Paris

Great news that Paddy Shannahan, one of the eight players who represented New Zealand at the 2010 Homeless World Cup, will be travelling to Paris to Volunteer at the 2011 Homeless World Cup. Good on you Paddy. Paddy has worked hard to make this happen and will be fundraising for sponsorship over the next few months to pay for his trip and raise money for the Homeless World Cup. Volunteering in Paris will give Paddy the opportunity to meet and engage with players, staff and fellow volunteers from across the globe at this first-class international football tournament. He’ll have the opportunity to gain a wide-range of new skills and experience from the role including pitch-side assistance, event management and working with the media.

Volunteer: National Network Development Coordinator

Street Football National Championship (2009 event)

THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED – MORE INFO SOON

Are you interested in community development and football?

Do you enjoy organising events?

Street Football Aotearoa, in conjunction with local partners, provides fitness and football training for homeless and socially excluded people in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. We have supported two teams to participate in Homeless World Cup tournaments – at the 2008 Melbourne event, and in 2010 in Rio de Janeiro.

Our charitable organisation is looking for a volunteer to develop and coordinate the Street Football Network across Aotearoa/New Zealand.  We would like to strengthen and grow our network of street football projects, so as to improve the existing projects and offer more people the opportunity to play and benefit from sport.  We also plan to host a National Street Football Tournament during 2011 to give the teams the opportunity to meet and play together.

Back in Aotearoa!

The New Zealand team have returned from the Homeless World Cup, tired and bedraggled and definitely pleased to be back in Aotearoa!

Although the team lost their INSP Trophy final against Slovenia, an impromptu rugby match with students in Botofogo was more successful with the tackling in particular drawing the praise of the locals.

The finals of both the men’s and women’s Homeless World Cup were won comfortably by the two Brazilian sides against Chile and Mexico respectively. In an emotional closing awards ceremony, awards were also presented to the Chilean no. 5 as player of the tournament and the Kenya goalkeeper who was honoured best goalkeeper.

NZ finished 42nd overall, one behind the 2008 placing. Only time will tell if the individual players have benefited from their experiences overseas.

Kiwi Victory!

This morning’s rematch against South Korea in the INSP Networking Trophy ended in New Zealand’s first victory of the trip so far and means qualification for a final game to be played against Slovenia tomorrow. The match against the Koreans had been on the cards for a couple of days and gave the Street Blacks an opportunity to exorcise the demons of a previous game when Korea broke the rules in fielding two Brazilian players for the whole game.

This time after strong encouragement to play more of their own nationals they fielded only one Brazilian and were comfortably beaten 7:2. It was good to see Paddy back playing again- he got his name on the scoresheet alongside Tim. Kaha was the stand out player of the game with 5 goals.

Last night our first round opponents Kenya and Ghana proved their strength by both making it to the last 8. Neither has progressed further than this though, and the final will be played between hosts Brazil and fellow South Americans Chile. Game of the day was a magical match-up between ‘auld enemies’ Scotland and England that ended 11:10 to the Scots.

More fun than wins

After 6 days of football, most of the players’ bodies are failing in one way or another. Ankles have been particularly troublesome with Terereao joining the invalid roster. Dr Coração (the Street Blacks’ team doctor) has been delighted to have the chance to focus on something other than the ubiquitous small dogs wearing booties being walked in Copacabana.

Today’s games – against Finland and Slovenia -  both had very close first halves.  Goalscoring was once again a problem though, and both matches ended in fairly heavy defeat.

In the afternoon, some of the group survived the metro to explore the Maracana – Brazil’s national football stadium, built for the 1950 World Cup and being refurbished for the 2014 Cup.  The team were shown around and told some of the history of this iconic ground;  some of the players, more familiar with Frank Bunce than Franz Beckenbauer, discovered who Pele is.

Keen to show their prowess with the oval ball,  the team are now looking forward to a game of Sevens against a Brazilian team tomorrow.
